NEW DELHI: Fifteen young bikers who were arrested from central Delhi on July 22 for causing mayhem and allegedly assaulting four policemen and three TV journalists have been ordered by a city court to perform community service at a place of worship seven hours a week for a month.
The order comes months after a similar ruling, when an 18-year-old boy arrested for drunken driving, was asked to regulate traffic at a busy Kalkaji intersection.

The order was later stayed by a sessions court.
Additional sessions judge Swarna Kanta Mehra on Friday granted bail to the 15 youths on personal bonds of Rs 25,000 each and the condition that they perform community service. The judge also thought it would be 'desirable’ if the accused spent two hours every week listening to religious discourses at a gurdwara or any other place of worship. Nearly all 15 accused are Sikh boys.
The judge said that at the end of the one-month period, the accused would have to produce a report from the head priest of the place of worship saying that they had complied with the court order. The parents also need to file affidavits on their wards’ compliance with the judge’s ruling.
The judge stated that the youths were being released on bail as she didn’t want them to mix with hardened criminals in jail. "It will not only spoil their future but there is a likelihood of these boys becoming criminals," she observed.
